When is a special edition not a special edition? When a film such as Some Like It Hot receives that distinction, but isn't given the material to support it. MGM has released two versions of this film, a basic edition with no special features, and this one, with next to no significant special features. The picture quality is quite good, though it does show minor signs of age. It is disconcerting, though, that the film is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.66:1, while it was shown theatrically at 1.85:1. Why a different screen size was used is anyone's guess. MGM has created a new English 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack, but it doesn't sound any better or worse than the original mono track, which is also included. In addition, there are mono tracks in French and Spanish, with subtitles in those two languages also. As for the extras, they aren't anything to get excited about. The highlight is a 30-minute interview by Leonard Maltin with Tony Curtis, who discusses the making of the film in his usual dramatic fashion. Of far less importance is a brief featurette on Sweet Sue's All Girl Band, which consists of four actresses casually reminiscing about their experience on the film. Next, there is a "virtual hall of memories," displaying behind-the-scenes photos in a slightly different way than most photo galleries. The final features are an extensive look at the pressbook designed for the film and seven trailers (the disc also includes trailers for six other Billy Wilder films). Sorely missed is the audio commentary that was present on the earlier laserdisc. This is truly one special edition that isn't all that special.
